Prometric Health & Safety Testing

Legislation

Legislation is an important driver for health and safety, and sets out the key priority areas for industry to work on. Changes are expected with regard to legislation that directly impacts upon the construction industry.

The ConstructionSkills Health & Safety test sets the standard for the industry.  Taken by over 500,000 people every year, it ensures that everyone working in construction has a minimum level of health and safety awareness.

The test is under continuous review to keep it in line with current legislation and ensure it meets industry requirements. As a result of this process, we have developed a new Managerial and Profession Health & Safety Test.

The new test brings together 2 tests types to simplify the process and reduce confusion. The new test replaces the Professionally Qualified Persons tests.

Old tests ceased on 31 July 2009. The new test started on 1 August 2009 and can be booked from 1 June 2009.

Preparing for the test

There’s no need to worry about your test as long as you are prepared for it. There is no substitute for good health and safety training.

If you have been trained, have experience and good health and safety knowledge you may find that you only need to practice the test questions. Those with less experience may find that more intensive preparation would be better, such as a one day course.

There are a range of publications and courses available to help you train and revise for the test.

Health & Safety Test BookAll the Questions and Answers from the ConstructionSkills Health and Safety Test – Edition 8

This official publication is essential reading as it is the only book that contains all the multiple-choice questions and answers for the operative ConstructionSkills Health & Safety Test delivered from April 2007.

This book will help you prepare for any of the 13 tests including Operatives-Core Test as well as supervisor, Managerial and Professional, and HVACR tests.

It also provides important information on how to book your test and what to expect at the test centre.

Booking a test

Before you proceed it is useful to note:

You will need to quote the ConstructionSkills registration number for each candidate – if you don’t have a number you will need to supply the candidate’s home address, date of birth and National Insurance number.

If email addresses are supplied at time of booking, candidates will be sent email confirmation of their test date and time.

How the test works

The test is multiple choice and is conducted via computer – you select the correct answer by either using a mouse or using a touch sensitive computer screen.

You don’t need any special computer skills and you can have a tutorial practice session before sitting your test if you wish. Sessions are monitored, so assistance is always on hand.

Questions are taken from an approved selection covering topics such as site hazards, working at heights, using dangerous substances and understanding warning signs. All the possible questions are listed in the Test Question Book and CD-Rom.

There are different categories of test, depending on which CSCS or affiliated card scheme you will be applying for – we can help advise you when you book. The category of test you sit will also influence the selection of questions in your test and how many you will be asked.

Usually, you will be asked 40 questions, to be answered in 45 minutes, although some specialist tests have 50 questions and last 60 minutes. Most candidates finish well before time.

Categories of test

There are currently 13 versions of the test for different trades, tailored to give candidates specific health and safety skills relating to their job. Any queries regarding which category of tests are suitable for different cards should be made to the relevant card schemes direct.
